Harry Potter- Bildungsroman

If Harry Potter is not a bildungsroman, we must reflect upon our definition. He meets the requirements, not just merely the act of growing up, but growing in character and strength in to a man. Not only does he strive to fight his own personal battles, but he is also fighting for everyone else. His personal battles range from deep anger to desperate loneliness, and even jealously. Especially in the last few books, we see Harry face more internal battles, at times we even become irritated with Harry ourselves, yet we identify with that need to belong to something, somewhere. Although fantastical at times, it’s the raw feelings and emotion in Harry’s story that ground it. His development and progression to realize his mission take time (like a whole six books worth and even well into the seventh). So yes, Harry Potter meets the critical points of what is considered a bildungsroman.
